In Monmouthshire, there are over 190 children are currently looked after. With fewer than 50 fostering households, we face real challenges in meeting their needs.
When foster families need a break because of illness, family emergencies, or simply to recharge , we sometimes have to turn to for-profit independent fostering agencies (IFAs). While these agencies can provide respite care, it’s not ideal. When children are placed with IFA’s, they may have to move in with families living outside of Monmouthshire. Those carers aren’t part of our local fostering community, which means children can miss out on support, connections, and shared experiences we build though regular events and activities with Foster Wales.
But what if you could help change that?
When children stay with Monmouthshire-approved foster carers, even for short breaks, we can make sure their care is consistent and stable.
what is short break (respite) fostering?
Short break fostering is exactly what it sounds like: offering a child a safe, nurturing home for a short period, usually one weekend a month.
It gives full-time foster carers the chance to rest and recharge. At the same time, it gives children the opportunity to build new, trusting relationships in a stable and supportive environment.
why short break fostering matters
“Fostering a child and giving that child the best start in life is a joy and a privilege, but we all need a break on occasions, family funerals, ill health, or even just a few days off to celebrate a big birthday. It is so important to know there are people who would be able to offer a short break and look after these children as we do.” – Karen, local foster carer
Short break carers are a vital part of the fostering community. They provide continuity, stability, and a sense of extended family for children in care.
“Being full-time generic carers but also having provided monthly respite for three brothers for nearly three years has shown us how valuable and rewarding this role is. The relationship we have built with the boys has been brilliant, different to the ones we build with the children we care for full-time but just as enjoyable and fulfilling. We feel building a connection and an ongoing relationship is so important for all children in care, hopefully just like being part of their extended family!” – Debbie, foster care
“A truly rewarding experience, just try it, you won’t be disappointed.” – Kathy, foster carer
“I’ve only been doing it a few months but when my first respite foster child said to me, completely at random… ‘I feel safe here.’ It just melted my heart. I knew I was doing the right thing. He has grown and blossomed in just a few months, and it makes it all so worthwhile!” – John, foster carer
